Mercurial Mercury

I went to school in the mid 80s to mid 90s.  At that time most of what there was to know about the general natures of the planets were known.  Mars was a lifeless rock.  Venus was a hellacious greenhouse.  The asteroids were chunks of rock that never became a planet, not a planet that blew apart.  We had gas giants.  We had Pluto.  And then there was the great unknown abyss.  Really, the further one got from the sun, the less was known.  There certainly had to be something out there, something a little farther than Pluto, but we weren’t taught about Oort Clouds and Kuiper Belts.

We were taught that the moon was tidally locked to the earth, which is why we always see the same face.

And we were taught that Mercury was tidally locked to the sun.

In looking around for outdated scientific theories, it never occurred to me that there was one residing firmly inside my own head.  Because in spite of what every science teacher who touched on astronomy taught me in school, Mercury is not tidally locked.  What’s more, this has been known by science since 1965.

1965.  As in for at least 20 years before the first time I was likely taught about what tidal locking was and what astronomical bodies it applied to.

I’m not sure exactly what to chalk that up to.  Certainly teachers who are covering general sciences and aren’t astronomy-specific aren’t going to keep up on every new development.  It’s probably just what they learned in school, what the textbooks still said, any number of possible excuses.  I’m not trying to point any fingers or assign any blame here.  Instead, I find it an interesting exercise in the speed at which new scientific knowledge proliferates.

We probably think of ourselves as living in a very connected age, one in which new bits of information can fly around the world.  We aren’t reliant on monthly scientific journals, weekly news magazines, daily news papers.  We have the internet, a constant source of the new, the updated, and the changing.  And yet, in this world, there is still obsolete scientific knowledge out there.

From a story telling perspective it means there are two Mercuries.

On Mercury classic we have a world where one side is exposed to all the heat and radiation spat out by the sun, shooting around in an orbit half as far as the earth, and one side impossibly cold, exposed only to the unfeeling harshness of space.  With no atmosphere, there’s no potential of the heat getting shared around the planet, so the dark side approaches absolute zero.  Here, stories can take place on the delimiter between the two, trying to constantly walk that tightrope between too hot and too cold.  Or under the surface.  Or in protective domes on either side.  It’s an interestingly static world.

And then we’ve got modern Mercury, spinning on its axis so slowly that a Mercurial day is two Mercurial years long.  The heat of the day and the cold of the night would be just as drastic as on the static planet, but now the delimiter moseys slowly around the planet, meaning that anyone looking to walk that tight rope has to be in constant, but slow, movement.  Considering the length of a day on Mercury and the diameter of the planet, some quick envelope math suggests the line between night and day is moving at just 2.25 miles per hour.  Compare that to the nearly 1000 mph that would be required to constantly stay on the day/night line on planet earth.  Life under the surface may not change, but settlements on the surface need to either prepare for that continual 2.25 mph trek, or be prepared to withstand both extremes that the planet offers.

Both planets present their unique challenges.

So I suppose this is in part an exploration of the natures of Mercury, old and new, and in part a warning about relying on what you are certain about when crafting a story.  Because I could have told you with certainty until yesterday that Mercury was tidally locked.  If you’re intentionally using old/bad science, that’s fine and dandy, but if you’re looking for realism, make sure the reality in your head matches the reality around us.

Seltzer Water and Venus

The things I learn.  I’ve been doing a watch through of Cosmos lately, and got to the episode on Venus.  I listened closely as Sagan recounted a history of the theories about Venus.  Naturally it started with the one I was the most familiar with, the theory that the cloud cover of Venus must be water vapor clouds (the only kind known to humanity at the time).  Therefore Venus must be a wet world, covered either with a primordial swamp or made up entirely of a planet-wide ocean.

I know I’ve talked about this theory before.  I’m even working on a story right now around the theory, and it’s a fun write.

But then it went on.  As we became more sophisticated in our science, humanity came to learn there was not water vapor around Venus, but that the cloud layer that covered the planet was, by and large, carbon dioxide.  However, just because one part of our knowledge of Venus was proven wrong doesn’t mean that we abandoned other parts.  People were still convinced that Venus was covered in an ocean, but with carbon dioxide skies.

So logically, there must also be a lot of CO2 in the water.

So therefore Venus must be covered by an ocean of seltzer water.

This is what I love about old scientific theories.  Sometimes they made fantastic leaps to answers that seem absurd to us today, but each was through a series of seemingly logical steps.  Clouds meant water.  Water meant oceans.  CO2 meant seltzer.  And they open up to us worlds that feel unimaginable, but at points in human history have been seen as “fact.”  Perhaps not by the world at large, but by anybody.  And these factual worlds make for just awesome story settings.

State of the Writer: May 2011

Hey, look at that.  It’s a new month, so it’s another chance for me to unbutton a shirt button to allow for optimal naval gazing.  April was an oddly productive month for me, which is largely to say that I was productive in odd directions.  The primary project of the month has been working on updates for my Lucha Libre story, something that’s turned into a pure joy to write and work on in a way few other stories have.  Almost a shame it’s so short, but there’s really nothing else I can do with it.  Going into May, that story is still going to get much of my focus because even though it’s not due until July 1, I’ve got a personal deadline of May 12 set.

In other projects, Future Lovecraft has just opened up, and yes, that’s the story I was talking about in my previous post.  I have a concept that I like, I just can’t quite crack the blank page to really get a start that I like.  Perhaps because I’ve got a few other stories running around my brain that are insisting on being told one-by-one.  These are the Steam Worlds.  These are the stories that came from my curiosity with the way that the Victorians imagined the earth and the cosmos working.  One already existed, then four more titles came about in the course of about an hour.  By the end, these stories will head to Mars, Venus, Phaeton, the Moon, and even inner Earth.  Right now they exist in the following formats:

  • Mars: Submitted to an anthology, still waiting to hear back (anxious, anxious)
  • Venus: Plot noodled.  I’m loving the plot I’m coming up with, which will include elements of Chernobyl, UrbEx, and 1940s air pollution disasters.  And robots.
  • Phaeton: Title with a vague X meets Y notion.  Least developed of the five.
  • The Moon: Change of title, change of focus, and suddenly there’s a story to be told here.
  • Inner Earth: This one depresses me a little.  Possibly the most ambitious theme and concept of the set.

I don’t know what will ultimately end up happening to them.  Mars, being in current circulation, could really help the others get told and sold.  Perhaps one day when several are sold and some rights revert they might merge together and be my first short story collection.  For now, I’ll search for homes where I can find them without worrying about continuity between them.  They don’t share characters, and don’t really share a timeline, they just exist in similar worlds.

Been reading too much Save the Cat.  Has me wanting to write another screenplay.  A proper one.  Maybe one that I could put up on Amazon Studio.  More on that if it actually starts happening.  Also been thinking about a certain xenophobe and his Serbian mentor.

State of the writer’s beer: Mustache Cat fermentation has slowed.  Bottling could happen this weekend, is more likely to happen next weekend.  Might be able to crack a bottle in time for June.  Looking at my options for batch two, considering a Ginger/Lemon/Honey Ale offered by Austin Homebrew.

It’s going to be a three Fortnightcap month.  First one will be up tomorrow, probably in the form of a new article.
