I’ll make another post when it actually goes live, but after a few weeks of hunting and killing old bad habit words (seems, a bit, rather, “found himself”, started) I’m ready to put Rust up for sale in the Kindle store this week. First I’m going to go over all of the documentation one more time while trying to prepare a price point, which will probably be no higher than $3. This is about spreading awareness of myself, not about making a profit. I’d almost be tempted to just give it away, but it’s that odd rule that people seem to respect something that costs them a few dollars much more than something being given away for free. That’s why no one respects your mom. WOOOOAH! See, I can say things like that, cause no one reads this.

Also this week, look for my first contribution to Unleaded: Fuel for Writers, which I’ll cross post here. Ya know. For all my faithful readers.

Hasn’t been much said in here of late, cause there’s been very little to say. I’ve entered 2010 with a rather protracted illness that, while not dire or anything, has somewhat sapped any interest I have in writing for the time being. It’s going to be a slow road to recovery, which will either happen with plenty of time and medicine or with a potential surgery, depending on what is determined to be the exact cause of the condition. Honestly, I’m hoping for the latter, as it would probably be a more immediate recovery. That’s just the kind of thing it’s been, I’d rather just get it all over with even if it means an invasive procedure rather than put up with it for another couple of months.

So hopefully I’ll be back on pace soon, I’ve been turning over some ideas for getting Capsule restarted (including even a shift in POV for part two of the novel), but it’s likely still going to be a week or three before I really feel up to writing.

In my effort to make this blog ever more and more of an actual living thing that one day people other than Day and Renee might read and enjoy, I’ve added content down the right hand side over there in the form of some countdowns. Three big events:

Capclave: Seriously, a great place to be a writer and just to hang out. This will be an early trial for CVS 2.0, but will not yet be the official coming out party. Still, several of us are talking about being there, and at just $55 head, it’s a rather good value. Last year I went to both World Fantasy and Capclave, and would you believe it’s Capclave I got more out of? Well believe it.

Nanowrimo: This is when I’ll be doing a lot of work on actually writing Capsule. There’s something about Nanowrimo that just gets me writing in a way that is hard to duplicate at other times in the year. I’ve been victorious four out of the last 5 years.

Balticon: When you see us talking 2.0, this is what it’s about. This is where several CVS members have some name and face recognition, and this is going to be the big coming out party. But the time Balticon rolls around, I really am hoping to have a first draft of Capsule, and at least a good chunk of the second draft of Conqueror Worm.

Seriously, I should be doing a lot more about the CVS 2.0 stuff than I am, and that really sucks. We have this great mutual support idea where we’re all going to go out, finish up big projects, then start being a visible force at Capclave and Balticon, and what have I done since then? I’ve reopened Conqueror Worm and started doing some editing on it, but haven’t gotten very far, and realized that I need to completely throw away Chapter Two and start over with it. Why? Well first drafts are great when you’re just getting ideas down, but when you go back and start making sure everything is accurate…and you have two historical characters who were both teatotalers sitting down and splitting a bottle of cognac…well, that’s what I like to call a serious “second draft issue”. And since this is the second draft.

I’ve also discovered, through his letters and other non-fiction writing, that a certain character of mine who shall remain nameless was a racist, xenophobic luddite. And another character of mine is a Slavic inventor. Which I’ve also got to take care of this draft. And a certain horrific otherworldly realm of horrors and nightmares that shall remain nameless is presented as, if anything, silly in the first draft. I always knew that was the problem, and was kind of hoping that would be the focuse of my second draft, reworking those sections, but with the need to potentially change the whole interpersonal dynamic between two characters…this is going to be a hell of an edit.

But really, I’ve gotten almost nowhere, and for that I blame the fact that I’m running off to get married in two weeks (my god, is it only two weeks?) and just haven’t had my mind in the game. Hopefully when I get back, I’ll be more focused, and more ready to really tackle CVS 2.0 and the big editing pass on Conqueror Worm.

Oh, finally got my Writers of the Future rejection for Belmeth, a few weeks later than usual and after the submission deadline, but I didn’t have anything else ready to go anyway. What with focusing on Conqueror Worm, my short story career right now will probably be to just cycle Belmeth, Sleep, and Div0 to a few different markets, possibly to include Escape and Pseudopod, which someone got me hooked on (though good timing, since my favorite radio station just got taken away, screw you very much CBS Radio). The same someone that really needs to make a blog post about her vision for CVS 2.0, since she’s one of the ones who started it, dagnabbit.
